Aujourd'hui, c'est l'anniversaire de Raymond Loewy, né le 5 novembre 1893 à Paris et mort le 14 juillet 1986 (à 92 ans) à Monaco, est un styliste industriel et graphiste français devenu franco-américain après sa naturalisation.

Il part pour les États-Unis en 1919. À New York, il trouve du travail comme étalagiste pour des grands magasins dont Macy's et comme illustrateur de mode pour les journaux Vogue et Harper's Bazaar. En 1929, il obtient le poste de directeur artistique de Westinghouse. Un an plus tard, il ouvre sa propre agence de design Raymond Loewy et sa première commande en tant que designer industriel est de moderniser la machine à dupliquer, le cyclostyle, inventée par David Gestetner. En 1931, il épouse Jhona Thomson (ils divorcent en 1945). Les années 1930 le voient travailler pour Shell dont il dessine le logo, Coca-Cola pour qui il dessine divers objets aux couleurs de la marque, les voitures Studebaker, Greyhound Linesetc... Sears, Roebuck and Company lui commande le design du réfrigérateur Coldspot en 1934 dont les ventes passent de 60 000 à 275 000 unités. En 1938, il est naturalisé citoyen américain. Le design du paquet de cigarettes Lucky Strike date de 1940. Son agence s'agrandit et devient, en 1944, Raymond Loewy Associates comptant 150 employés et autant de clients actifs.

Pour le chemin de fer de Pennsylvanie, il dessine les locomotives K4s, S1, T1 et la GG1. La collaboration avec Studebaker, débutée en 1936, continue et donne naissance en 1947 à la Studebaker Champion, en 1953 à la Studebaker Commander et à la Studebaker Avanti en 1961.

En 1948, il épouse Viola Erikson. Ils ont une fille, Laurence. En 1953, il revient vers ses sources françaises et fonde, à Paris, la Compagnie de l'esthétique industrielle dirigée au départ par le designer et proche collaborateur Harold Barnett. De ces bureaux sont issus les logos pour les biscuits LU (1957), la marque de prêt-à-porter New Man (1969) dont la particularité est qu'il peut se lire à l'endroit comme à l'envers, pour les enseignes de Coop, L'Oréal, Monoprix. En 1963, son agence compte 250 collaborateurs.

Le président J.F. Kennedy lui commande la décoration de l'Air Force One. Plus tard, toujours dans l'aéronautique, l'aménagement intérieur du Concorde et de ses plateaux-repas lui est confié, en 1976, par Air France. La même année, il réalise le design de l'intérieur de la station spatiale Skylab pour la NASA.

Il est le créateur des logos BP, de la Baldwin Locomotive Works (locomotives Diesel avec une face de requin (en)) et du timbre Cinq cents John Kennedy, premier timbre d'hommage émis par la poste des États-Unis.

Raymond Loewy a dessiné la face avant des Studebaker 1950-1951, mais la ligne des Studebaker millésimes 1947-1953 a été dessinée par Virgil Exner. Exner faisait partie du studio Loewy et son projet pour le studio a été retenu par Roy Cole, patron de la firme. Suite à un désaccord entre Loewy, Exner et Cole sur les projets du nouveau modèle, Exner a été licencié par Loewy et directement engagé par Cole afin de finaliser les nouvelles voitures. Le style des modèles suivants produits à partir du millésime 1953 est l'œuvre de Robert Bourke, délégué par le studio Loewy chez Studebaker.

Il est évoqué dans le film de Martin Scorsese Aviator (2004).
